Not Every Website Does the Same Job

Whether you want to present your company, your products or your own work, there are many kinds of websites, and some serve a given goal far better than others. Here are the main types and what each one is good for.

Static Websites

A static site presents content (text, images, video) without much interaction beyond a contact form. It is clear, fast and affordable, and rarely needs updating. The downside: the owner cannot easily change content without technical help.

Dynamic Websites

Dynamic sites let the owner update content regularly and let visitors interact: buy products, post comments, download files. They suit businesses that publish news, launch new products or sell online.

Specialised Types

  • HTML sites: light, fast and compatible everywhere. With HTML5 they can be as impressive as Flash sites once were, on every device.
  • Flash sites: once popular for their animation, but unsupported on most mobile devices and weak for SEO.
  • E-commerce sites: online stores that sell with lower costs than a physical shop, offering payment and shipping options, discounts and product reviews.
  • CMS sites: a content management system gives the owner full control to update pages, news and media without calling a developer. Ideal for blogs and company news.
  • Forums and social networks: online communities where members discuss and share information.
  • Facebook sites: pages hosted in tabs of a Facebook page. They keep visitors on Facebook but are not visible to search engines.
  • Portals: gateways that offer many services in one place, such as email, news, search and shopping.
  • Online galleries: built to showcase images and video, ideal for a photographer's portfolio.
  • Wikis: sites anyone can edit quickly, great for collaboration but harder to keep accurate.
  • Mobile sites: a separate version of a site for phones and tablets. Unlike a responsive site, which adapts the same pages to every screen.

Conclusion

The right type depends on what you want your website to achieve. At Etherlogic every site we design is responsive, and we help you choose the structure that fits your goals.
